Mass spectrometry based metabolic profiling to identify and validate anti-inflammatory metabolite in bio-fluid samples
The TCB is looking to study and develop intrinsically valid sampling and detection systems for the determination of volatile organic compounds in complex media. Specifically this projectuses Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GCMS) based metabolomics approach to characterise the metabolomics profile of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to identify and validate anti-inflammatory biomarkers. To examine the effect of fish oil supplements with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); blood samples will be extracted and derivatised to their corresponding fatty acid methyl esters which will be subsequently analysed by GCMS. In conjunction with this Advion compact mass spectrometer with an ambient ionisation breath sampling system and metabolomics methods for breath analysis will allow comparison of breath and tissue samples.
